I apologize in advance for this venting, complaining rant of a post I’m about to dump on you today.
Let me back track a bit …
The week began as any other normal one does with the girls returning to daycare on Monday as both Daddy and I return to work. Daddy has just recovered from being sick all of the previous week. Our daughter, Little B comes home that evening with sniffles and a bit of a cough. She complains of not feeling well so we put her to bed early to rest. She ends up hacking away in cough, all night long.
Mommy doesn’t sleep a wink!
Thank goodness for my parents, my back-up babysitters when my kids are too sick to go to daycare. They took Little B in to see a doctor the very next morning. It turns out, she has an ear infection. The same day, Big B, our eldest daughter, stayed home from school with a headache and nausea. She remained in bed all day long. Later Tuesday night, Little H decides to join in with the coughing right along with her Daddy and sister Little B. That’s three family members hacking away in cough all night long.
Mommy doesn’t sleep a wink again!
Wednesday morning arrives and tired Mommy still has to go to work. The girls stay home again with Grandma and Grandpa. I barely get through my day being so tired. Later that night, Little H has made a turn for the worse and while badly congested, is up all night coughing, whimpering and restless. She’s in full-on sick mode and it ain’t pretty. The poor kid doesn’t sleep much at all.
Neither does Mommy … yet another night!
On Thursday, I take Little H into the clinic because she woke up with a fever. She can’t eat because her cough won’t let up long enough for her to chew let alone swallow anything. The doctor finds that both her ears drums are engorged and red. He concludes that Little H has a Croup-like cough and orders her an antibiotic for the ears and a steroid medicine for the cough. I leave the clinic and head to the pharmacy to fill the prescriptions. I’m tired, haven’t had my coffee or eaten anything for breakfast. Little H’s fever is rising fast. Little B is whining that she’s bored and asking to go home. We are waiting at the pharmacy for our prescriptions to be filled. 30 minutes pass until finally they’re ready. Upon paying for the drugs, I realize I’ve misplaced my keys. The girls are now at their wits end and behaviour is escalating. I am losing Little H fast, so I rip open the Childrens’ Advil and give her a dose right then and there while a few people look at me funny. Backtracking my steps to find my keys, I realize they fell through one of the holes in the shopping cart. A clerk brings them to me and I leave.
In go all the medicines and up goes Little H to bed. She doesn’t fuss. She doesn’t fight to stay up and play with her sister. Down she goes at 11:00am. Up she was at 2:00pm and the little munchkin slept right through. My heart goes out to her because she is the one who the bugs have hit the hardest, yet she is the smallest and youngest. I pray that she feels better today.
It so sucks being a Mommy when you have to endure seeing your kids sick and knowing there is only so much you can do to help them to be more comfortable. It is so much nicer when they can blow their own noses and get all that stuff out!
And here I am now. The only one left in my family who has yet not been sick. The only one who has not slept three nights in a row. The one who has been stressing over the well-being of the little ones. Where does this all leave me?
I’m the next one to be sick. When it happens though, I’m going straight to bed and locking the door behind me. Daddy can take over the fort!
