My guest blogger today is Kate from over at Mommy Monologues. If you don’t already know her, you need to get on over to her place and check her out!
She’s a Mommy to a sweet little guy Lboy and a wife to a wonderful husband. She has many talents of which I will let her share with you. I met Kate on Twitter about 6-8 months ago and her blog I first began following when I started out with my own. She has been nothing but sweet and friendly with me and I enjoy the time we get to chat during Friday night #wineparty’s!
Viola … the beautiful Kate!
1. Who is Kate besides a Mother and a blogger? Do you work? Tell us what you do!
I don’t really know who I am anymore outside of motherhood. Let’s see if I can think back three years ago…. I was 3 weeks into my graduate school program studying History with an emphasis in Mexican Feminist Studies. I have two bachelor’s one in Spanish and the other in Latin American Studies. I thought I was going to be a female Indiana Jones and spend my time traveling Latin America with my hot husband.
Now, I’m just a different kind of Indiana Jones. Only instead of adventures in foreign countries, I’m learning how to navigate the crazy world of Toddlerhood!
2. How did you get started with blogging? How long have you been doing it? What do you like most about it now?
I started blogging in March of 2010. I was attracted to it for several different reasons. One, I was totally obsessed with all the designs that I saw all over the place. And mostly, I was extremely jealous of the fact that I had a friend who was blogging and she had this amazing outlet to be creative, to be herself, & to interact with people from the comfort of her living room. I felt so trapped as a new mom. Going from spending my time reading history in a foreign language to being a glorified milk cow was hard!
Today, I love blogging because of the interaction I have with people. I’m totally in love with the fact that I can “travel” to Indonesia when I read a friend’s blog post or Canada or my amazing Mexico. I meet so many people and I love it!
3. What advice can you give those of us who haven’t tried Vlogging yet?
How do we start? What do we need?
Just know that everyone HATES their own voice, most people HATE the way they look on camera, & that they are going to be judged by their blogging peers for looking stupid or weird. And you know what?! It won’t happen that way!
If you want to start vlogging just join in on our weekly VlogTalk meme every week. All you do is choose from three prompts and then make a video! It’s easy breezy! If your computer doesn’t have a webcam, you can use an Iphone OR you can buy a really, really inexpensive webcam for $18-$30.
4. Favourite TV show? movie? Hollywood star?
Right now, my favorite TV shows are Bones and all the Real Housewives series (minus Atlanta and the OC.) I love Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts or Jennifer Aniston. Favorite men? I’m totally digging the new actor that just did the movie Thor, Chris Hemsworth. Look him up, he’s HOT!
5. Besides blogging and web design, what else are you passionate about?
I love to read, read, read. After the kiddo goes to bed I will work on all the projects I have going on in the blogosphere. When all that is over I will read at least one chapter in a book before I fall asleep, even if it’s 1 in the morning. I don’t care.
6. What is the last book you’ve read?
Water for Elephants. I honestly, thought I would hate it. But I loved it. And I thought the movie was great too! I definitely recommend it! And I read The Lincoln Lawyer about a month ago, that was awesome as well!
7. What world issue are you most concerned about?
With my academic background I’m always concerned with the issue of Latino immigration. I won’t really go into my stance here because it is so polarizing in the United States right now, but it’s something I’m very aware of, especially for the lives of the immigrants. It’s a tough situation!
8. If you could travel any where in the World and money wasn’t an concern, where would you go and why?
Anywhere, everywhere! I would love to see London. I’m totally enamored with the history there. I want to go to Bali. I want to see Japan. I want to see Vatican City. Ireland. Russia. India. I would love to go back to Spain. Mexico. Argentina. Chile. Honduras. Everywhere!
9. What are your plans for this Summer?
Todd & I are hoping that we are going to make it to at least Colorado this summer. We are going to road trip it up there all the way from Arkansas. And if we get crazy enough, we may try to make it to Yellowstone National Park. I love it there!
10. Besides VlogTalk Tuesday, what other new and exciting things are coming up on your blog?
I am about to launch a website/blog totally dedicated to my web & blog design business. I’m super, super excited about it! It’s called 2711 Designs. It’s going to be great!
