Today, I’m feauturing a Mom who has definitely made a name for herself in the blogosphere. If you don’t read her already, you will definitely want to after today.
She’s a smart, sassy, say-it-as-it-is kinda girl who is also a stay-at-home Mom to her son.
She is the CEO of Mama Wants This.
Alison’s face and name can be found on most people’s blogs as she is really good about getting around the bloggy world and reading other people. She knows everyone!
You should know Alison too!
1. How did you come up with the name for your blog?
I started the blog with a very different intention from the direction it has appeared to take!
I was slightly obsessed with online shopping and was constantly looking for cute stuff for my son, and inevitably, stuff for myself. I also looked online for gift ideas for baby showers and newborns all the time. When I found something cute and interesting, I’d share it on my Facebook page. Then I thought, why don’t I just start a blog where I can feature all these things? Hence the name ‘Mama Wants This’ – for the stuff I want!
You can see that the blog today is quite far away from when it started. I figured “Mama Wants This” can be applied to many things, not just products. So I’m keeping it!
2. Were you really a PR Exec before becoming a Mother? Tell us about it. Will you ever go back to it?
Yes, I worked in PR for 8 years. I started in sales, didn’t like that after a year and stumbled into events management. That eventually led me to my first PR job in a small local agency in Malaysia. I worked in two more agencies, and in 2006, joined Nike Malaysia as Marketing Communications Manager. Two years after that, I was promoted to Marketing Manager for Nike Indonesia, where I worked out of Jakarta a week a month. We didn’t have a PR exec in the Indonesian team then, so I handled that as well.
I loved PR, and I think I was pretty good at it. Funnily, back when I first graduated from university, I told a job agency I’d like to work in public relations. I had no idea what it involved, and couldn’t even answer the question: what’s the difference between external and internal public relations, and the job agency person told me perhaps I should consider another career path. I like to think it’s serendipity that I eventually ended up in PR.
No, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to PR in the corporate world. I toyed with the idea of doing it freelance, and I’m still open to it – in a few years. Now, I’d just like to concentrate on my son and family.
3. I know you like lists. Do you ever make lists of things to do for your hubby and does he like lists as much as you?
We are currently working on a list of things we need for our new house! And a to-do list for the changes we’d need to make for the house. We’ve also worked on a list of places we’d like to go once we sort out the house.
Yes, we are a little obsessed with moving right now!
I don’t make lists for him as such, we usually do our own lists. He only makes lists when we have a trip planned. He’s very organized – he gets the rental car, accommodation, places to visit and so on, all worked out before we go on any holiday!
4. Favourite type of shoe? You can pick two but be sure to say why.
Wedges is my absolute favorite type of shoe. It’s versatile, comfortable, and can be casual or dress up an outfit. It’s much easier to walk in than your traditional heel and I can go as high as I like (I love heels, as I’m only 5’3″). They also elongate my legs! What’s not to love?
However, these days, you’ll likely find me in flip flops. They’re super comfortable and there’s no risk of me falling over if I’m carrying my son.
5. We all want to know! How do you manage to be the first person to comment on what seems like every blog in the blog universe?
Hahaha! Funny question.
I have the advantage of being in a different time zone. I’m 12 hours ahead of Easterners, so your PM is my AM. As most bloggers schedule posts to publish at midnight their time, it’s my morning/ early afternoon, so I’m online while the rest of you are sleeping!
6. Who were you or what did you do in your past life? Be creative.
I was a princess who had great power in my past life. I didn’t sit around looking pretty. I was a warrior, and fought for my kingdom’s freedom from the stronghold of the dictator.
You can tell I watch too much TV right?
7. Who holds the lead for you? Keanu Reeves or Brad Pitt? You have to choose and tell why.
Brad Pitt. I had posters of him in my room the entire 3 years I was in university – the posters moved with me as I lived in a different place every year. Why? He’s the most swoon worthy ineligible man in the Universe. Also, he can act.
8. 3 things we can always find in your purse. Tell why.
Cash – I find that it’s difficult to get by without money when in public.
Credit card – Just in case!
Security access cards to two apartments – My place and my in-laws’ place. My son goes to his grandparents frequently, so they gave me an access card!
9. What is the best part of being Alison? What one thing would you change about yourself and why.
Wow, I’ve never been asked this before.
I think honesty is my best quality. If you want the truth, I’ll be the person to give it to you.
I know it sounds egocentric, but I wouldn’t change a thing about me now. I’m who I am because of my experiences and who I am, is the person my husband loves. I’m sort of liking me now too.
10. What new and exciting things to do you have coming up on your blog that we should stay tuned for?
I have a new look and it’d be on WordPress!
I’m continuing my Guest Star series (which is very similar to this feature, Bruna!), and on Monday, the 11th, I have a very special guest. I’m really excited about that.
I’m also brewing a few ideas for another regular feature, but it’s still in very initial stages. So stay tuned!
11. Bonus: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I will be 40 in 5 years. I see myself with two children who will be just going to school and preschool. We’ll be living in New Zealand and I’ll still be a stay-at-home mom but with a business on the side, either freelance public relations or party planning. I’ll be doing yoga on my porch every morning, and going for a run in the evening when it’s cool. I’ll have a vegetable and fruit garden. I’ll also grow beautiful flowers. We’ll be living near farms where we can get fresh eggs and milk daily. We will bake our own bread.
Yes, I have BIG dreams!
Bruna, thank you so much for featuring me. It’s such an honor and I’ve had such great fun with the questions!
