I have another Throat Punch to share this week! Linking up with Deb from The Truth About Motherhood for her weekly meme.
This week’s throat punch goes out to dog owners at the beach.
~ No offense to people who own dogs or to dogs themselves. I am a true lover of the canine. I realize that not all dog owners necessarily fit into this category for Throat Punch because, honestly, there are a number of good, respectable dog owners out there. To the good ones, please disregard what I’m about to say. ~
My family and I spent a day at our local beach on Monday. The weather was sunny and it was warm out. Tons of people were at the beach, including people who owned dogs. Some people were really good about keeping their dogs on leashes and those who let them run free were really good about keeping them close by.
There were way too many dog owners though who were letting their dogs, small and large, run wild along the beach. These dogs were running over people’s blankets, sniffing around their food baskets, knocking over little kids in their path and ONE dog, literally pooped in a pool of water right in front of where my family was sitting and where my girls were building a sandcastle. The dog just stopped, squatted and pooped in front of us while his owners laughed their heads off.
What’s wrong with this picture?
What’s worse? The dog’s owner looked around to see if anyone was looking and then left the area without picking up their dog’s poop. I don’t care that the dog pooped in the little pool of water at the beach and that it would probably be wet when attempting to pick it up. You MUST pick up after your dog when he goes to the bathroom, especially when he does so in a public place!
My girls were playing in that water before the dog came and pooped there.
We had to move our set-up to another place after the dog pooped in that pool of water.
As the day progressed, I watched animal owners more closely and many of them let their dogs run around like crazy and poop and pee wherever they wanted with total disregard to others around. You don’t let your dog poop on a public beach where people come to lay in the sun, swim in the water, skim board in the small pools of water and build sandcastles in the sand.
You just don’t! It’s not considerate or sanitary!
Where is the common sense? Where’s the respect for the other people who are trying to enjoy the beach? For the kids who are terrified of dogs and don’t want one charging at them and growling?
No one is saying you shouldn’t bring dogs to the beach or that they have to be leashed up the whole time. What I am saying though is that if your dog isn’t trained where he/she can behave when unleashed or listen to commands so they’re not running around like crazy knocking over children and terrorizing them they should be kept a leash.
And if you’re dog poops, I don’t care where it is; you pick it up and throw it in the trash. Don’t leave it there for someone to step on or have to endure its smell.
Common courtesy, my friends ….
End of story.
