My BEEautiful friend Rusti is my guest today.
She’s the CEO of the blog, My Life as an Officer’s Wife.
Rusti and I met on Twitter at a Friday night #wineparty and we’ve been chatting ever since.
Rusti is married to her high school sweetheart, a Mom who works full-time in an office and web designer on the side. Design is her true passion.
1. Tell us a little about yourself, including your family members.
I’m a 31 year old small-town girl. I grew up (from age 4) in the same town that my parents, sister, and most of my & Hubs’ families still live in… Hubs and I met when we were 5 (really) and have been “together” for 14.5 years (married almost 5 of those) we have a 2.5 year old daughter – nicknamed Goose, and a chocolate lab – Turbo. Hubs is a cop, an active sports & outdoorsman, and he makes me laugh. Goose is adorable, sassy, sweet and the center of our world… she’s my heart. Turbo is an 85lb pain in my bum – but somehow I still like the mutt 😉 I’m from a very close, huggy/kissy/touchy family, and living just 40 minutes away from them all is sometimes torturous for me.
2. Give us some background on your blog. When you started it? How you decided on it’s name? How has it evolved?
I started blogging in 2006 at the suggestion of a friend – most of the girls I started blogging with were doing so on The Nest, and some had moved over to Blogger… I started my journey there, with a private blog – which turned into a NEW private blog (my current blog – My Life As An Officer’s Wife – named from the fact that I am just that!) after I got married… I blogged sporadically, and it wasn’t until last August that I started posting more often and publicly, and just this past January that I got back into it and started writing regularly… I had forgotten how much I missed it! What started as a journal-type blog full of boring daily habits and lots of complaining 😉 has grown to be slightly less boring daily habits 😉 and less complaining. I’m striving to push myself be more open and honest and write when I have something to say, not just to say that I did. Having funny toddler stories to share (and terrible twos stories as well) keeps me with a constant source of material to write about!
3. Would you classify yourself as the girl next door type of Mama or a high maintenance, fashionista Mama? Explain.
Girl-next-door for sure. first, I’m a semi-tom boy. I could live in jeans, T-shirts and jammies, although I do like to get prettied up on occasion, or wear a cute top just because once in a while. second, I’m lazy. I’ll grab the first thing that I can find to wear that doesn’t clash ridiculously or have too many wrinkles and throw it on. third, I don’t have the greatest fashion-sense. I think it ties in to me being lazy, I don’t care enough to pay that much attention to what I’m going to be wearing
4. What do you do for work? Career? Stay-at-home Mom?
I work full-time, 40 hours a week, outside of the home as a secretary in a Dean’s office at a Big Ten University. I also have a little freelance design business that doesn’t see much action, but usually enough to keep me doing something fun and artsy. I would love to someday be able to do design full time (and actually USE that degree I gave blood, sweat & tears for!) and while I would love to be a SAHM, I’m certain I don’t have what it takes… I’d tear my hear out before the first week was over… I still get jealous though when hearing about fun playdates that SAHM-friends have, or excursions they’re going on while I’m at work, or when Goose is having a heard time letting me go at daycare drop-off (thankfully those aren’t often!) I have some SERIOUS respect for SAHMs – y’all rock.
5. Favourite 80’s sitcom? movie? song?
I have a few 80’s sitcoms I’ve enjoyed re-runs of (Family Matters, Full House, Three’s Company, The Cosby Show) but mostly in the 80’s it was all about Care Bears, She-Ra and Jem & The Holograms for me 😉 I think that the only 80’s movies I saw when they came out were Disney 😉 (The Little Mermaid was a favorite!) others I still enjoy watching include Stand By Me, Field of Dreams, Star Wars Trilogy, The Breakfast Club, The Princess Bride, E.T., Die Hard… and pretty much ALL 80’s music is awesome, but I especially enjoy Air Supply, Billy Joel, Golden Earring, Heart, Jeff Healey Band, J. Giels Band, Eagles, Deep Purple – okay, let’s just say ALL 80’s MUSIC!
6. I’ve read on your blog that you love books and enjoy reading. What would you say are your three favourite authors or three favourite types/genres of books?
I love WAY too many authors, but in my top three for sure? Nora Roberts, Stephanie Laurens and Kay Hooper… I’m a huge fan of romance novels – and I’ll read any of them, historical, regency, contemporary, paranormal, fantasy, mystery, suspense… I also love mystery novels, and crime novels (and if they have it all – the mystery, crime and romance? well I’m in love!) Hubs just bought me an e-reader for my birthday (he says my books take up too much room) and I can’t WAIT to get started filling it up with treasures to read (although I’ll never stop buying actual books!)
7. Date Night Out or Date Night In – which kind do you and hubby get to have? What do you two like to do when you get the chance to be child-free?
Date Night Out is a rarity for us… with Hubs’ work schedule (night shift 3-4 days/wk) we generally spend all of his time off as a family… snuggling with a movie after we get Goose in bed is what you’ll find us doing most often… the (very) rare Date Night Out? most likely includes dinner, a movie, a concert or a casino… most often dinner and/or a movie we did manage quite a fun child-free #datenight recently though… *blushing*
8. Who was your celebrity crush as a teenager? How about now?
when I was a teenager I had the HOTS for Tom Cruise… I could watch Top Gun over and over and over… these days, my list of favorite #mancandy includes Gerard Butler, Ryan Reynolds, Viggo Mortensen, Hugh Jackman… *sigh*
9. Favourite cocktail? Favourite dinner? Favourite dessert?
Captain & Coke. Anything with carbs. (ha!) Cheesecake.
10. You have a new segment on your blog. Can you tell us about it?
I’ve had a little acronym saying for a while now – that was a spin-off of TGIF (Thank Goodness It’s Friday) that I started calling S.H.I.T. (So Happy It’s Thursday)… a couple of weeks ago I was looking for an idea for a blog post, and #SoHappyIt’sThursday popped into my head the first S.H.I.T. post was just me sharing some things I was thankful for, or happy about – since then I’ve turned it into a MEME and I’ve had people linking up to share why they are also So Happy It’s Thursday It’s fun, easy, and it helps me remember what I have to be thankful for each week!
What is your biggest fear about being an officer’s wife?
My biggest fear about being an officer’s wife… tough question. There are two huge fears for me, which are similar, but different. Obviously – as one might guess, the fear that Hubs might not come home. Having to tell my child(ren) that their Papa isn’t ever coming home again. I have nightmares about it sometimes, but I don’t dwell on it anymore. The other huge fear, and I almost feel guilty admitting that this one is slightly bigger (seriously, what could be worse than losing your spouse?) is the fear of him being injured on duty. I’m not talking a minor injury, but a big one. One that would put him in a hospital, or paralyzed in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. I’m not afraid of taking care of him, I would do anything for him, but knowing him as I do, my active, hunting, fishing, gym-aholic, cop… for him, that would be worse than death. The possibility of seeing him miserable for the rest of his life, scares the crap out of me. For him, that would definitely be his worst nightmare… and my biggest fear.
