The malls are bustling with anxious shoppers trying to get the items on their Christmas lists purchased early this year.
Every year, at this time, I’m reminded of what Christmas was like when I was a kid. I can remember it like it was yesterday.
I remember the excitement that filled us the day the Sears Christmas Wish Book arrived at our house. My sister and I would spend hours going through the catalog and picking out which toys we wanted to see under the tree. We’d also pick out items we wanted to get Mom and Dad for Christmas if we had the money to do so. There was SO much to choose from!
In those days, my parents shopped at Sears for almost all of their needs minus the groceries. Why wouldn’t they? My dad was employed by Sears for 25 years which came with the privilege of having an employee discount. It made sense for them to buy everything they needed from Sears. More than the discount though, I can remember my parents always saying how good Sears was about making sure their customers were satisfied and happy. There wasn’t anything Sears wouldn’t take back as a return, broken or in good condition.
Even though we lived close to a Sears store, my Mom did a lot of her shopping through the catalog. Most of the time, she phoned in her orders and then picked them up at the store a week later.
