Let’s BEE Friends with Melanie!

Well if it isn’t Friday already! Where does the time go?

Happy Weekend everyone and thank you to all of you who regularly stop by to visit on Let’s BEE Friends Friday. I love and appreciate your participation and support :)

Before we begin, you know what to do! Grab my button code, put it in a post you’ve written this past week and link it up below. No giveaways please.

Then hop around and read posts from others. You never know what you’ll learn or who you’ll meet. Have fun!

I’m super excited to tell you that I have Melanie from She’s Write hanging out with me today.

Melanie is ” a mom, a wife and a career woman, who loves food, red wine, clothes and talking about all of the above”.  Melanie is a journalist and writes for a living. She is never short of words or thoughts or ideas.

Today, she is sharing with us 10 wonderful things about herself.

She’sWrite: It’s What I Do

You know that mom who has lost all of her baby weight by the time her kid was four months old, always has perfect hair, great make-up (not too little, nor too much) and would never, ever be caught dead in yoga pants?

Yeah, that’s not me. I am the mom who was still calling that extra 20 pounds “baby weight,” even though my baby was 3 years old. (I’ve since had a second child, and he just turned 1, so I’m OK with calling it “baby weight.”)

My hair. Oh, my hair. I’m African American with relaxed hair, so it’s always a struggle to deal with. I rarely wear it straight though. It’s too much work, so I am either rockin’ a Chaka Khan-infused bed head, or it’s pulled back into a bun/ponytail. Neither is cute. I keep telling myself that with the right confidence, any hair style is OK. I know it’s a lie, but it keeps me going, so please, don’t judge.

Yoga pants. They’re a staple in my wardrobe these days. I try to “class it up” by wearing jeans outside the house. Yes, it’s classy.

But you know what? I’m OK with not being that “perfect” mom. Largely because I’d find it too confining to be in that Perfect Mom box. There’s beauty in imperfections, right?

I’m so stoked to be on Let’s BEE friends today, thank you for having me. I’m supposed to tell you guys 10 cool things about me. Um, I don’t think there are 10 cool things, so I’ll just pick 10 random facts/stories. I also will count the three points above because I’m running short on time due to my aforementioned 1 year old doing his Evel Knievel impersonation by performing death defying feats featuring our coffee table.

Let’s see, seven more…

I’m a Kansas girl. <Insert your favorite Wizard of Oz reference here> and I live in Chicago’s suburbs. It’s a little cookie-cutter out here in the ‘burbs, but it’s great for the kids and we’ve got some fantastic friends.

I am a journalist. I always wince when I say this for two reasons. A) It sounds way cooler than it is. People sometimes have a romanticized idea of what life is like as a journalist. They think Woodward and Bernstein, or foreign war correspondents. My journalism isn’t that sexy. And B) Some people immediately go on the attack and lump us journalists all into one category. The question usually starts: “Why does the media always …” My journalism isn’t irresponsible like that. Though, I’ve done some fun things in my years as a journalist, this summer I quit my company of 12 years because it wasn’t feasible to do my gig and raise my kids. (You can read about it here.) Now I’m freelancing and it’s fun, different, but fun.

Let’s see, how many is left… OK, half way there.

Also in the category of Things Sounding Cooler Than They Are: I’m a blogger for Huffington Post. It’s a great platform and neat to be able to reach a wide audience with my opinions. I’ll spare you the details of my pieces, but you can check them out here. Some are inspiring, others are provocative, all of them will make you think.

My husband is Norwegian. He’s an awesome Hubby who works too hard, but that kinda seems how life is these days, right? We used to travel to Norway every year, but since having kids, we’ve only been back twice. Most recently we spent three weeks there for the Christmas holiday.

Hmmm. I like to travel and this fall had a girls trip to Bermuda, that was fun and much needed.

I love blogging and the people I get to meet. Isn’t it strange how you can connect so well with people you haven’t met IRL? Some of my favorite posts are here.

Ummm. I’m running out of things to say. I suppose No. 10 would be that I used to have a California king snake named Othello.

Phew! So there, that’s 10 things about me. Now enough talk about me, I wanna know about you! Tell me a little about yourself and know that you’re welcome over on my blog anytime.  You can also find me on Twitter using @sheswrite or you can visit my Facebook page here.

Bruna- Thanks so much for having me! It’s been fun.

Love her! Very funny post. I just read two of Melanie’s posts. The one about white people and the one about the stroke victim. So interesting. Nice to hear the voice of a black woman!

Hope you like what you see when you come over to my little corner of the blogosphere! Also thanks for the Twitter follow! Catch ya in cyberspace! :)

Nice to meet you Melanie!! I do think it’s awesome that you’re a journalist (I always wanted to be one and ended up on the other side of the fence – I was a public relations girl for 10 years) and that you rock yoga pants.

    Happy Friday!

Thanks lady, but again, the journalism thing is not as awesome as one might think! I am proud of it though because I’ve gotten the chance to meet some awesome people and help people as well. Though in PR you too have met amazing people and been able to help folks out along the way too. :)

Ha! You may have dreamed of Chaka Khan hair, but your brush and comb as sooo happy that you don’t have it. I swear when I’m trying to untangle my hair I hear my comb cry. :) Thank you for your comment. I look forward to connecting more over the interwebs.

Let’s BEE friends is pretty awesome isn’t it? It such an honor to be here. I think Bruna and what she does is just wonderful. I love that you were like: Yes, jeans with heels are classy, same with flats! I agree, but since it’s winter, I’d have to add boots to the list of “How To Class Up A Pair Of Jeans.” I guess it’s all about the shoes, right? :)

I just recently found Bruna and her blog and i already love Fridays. It’s so great to always meet someone new… and I believe there will be no judgy-pants here. I live in yoga pants and like you believe wearing jeans out of the house classes it up!!! :)

    • says

Nice to meet you! Thank you for your comment. Yeah if jeans are classin’ it up, I’d hate to figure out what category some of my business suits would now be… Hmmm. Or even worse, what I used to wear to the club, you know, BEFORE the backfat and all. 😉

There’s something magical about Friday’s isn’t there? Thanks for your comment as well as your compliment on my smile! Off to check you out as well! 😉 I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Hi, nice to “meet” you!! I’m married to a foreigner as well, but instead of making trips back and forth we just moved to Europe!

    • says

Ha! Where in Europe? I haven’t talked about this on my blog at all and only my closest friends know, but we’re getting ready to do the same. I’m going to check out your blog to find out more! :)

I am all comfy in my yoga pants and messy bun hair as I write this! I will even leave the house without changing! shocking, really. I say, just own it.

I’d definitely love to hear more about this girls only Bermuda trip! It’s been ages since I even had a single “hen night”. Off to snoop around your blog! :)

    • says

Ooo! An admitted snoop! Don’t you love snooping? I do too! As long as it doesn’t violate anyone’s rights and all that. Anyway, when I was reading my post, I was thinking that I should have included a link to the Bermuda fun. Well better late than never I suppose: http://sheswrite.net/tag/bermuda/

      Thanks for stopping by!

I like you because she share the same belief about jeans, wearing them out of the house is classing it up. Nice to meet you.
