I found this photo the other day, Teen B, and it brought me back to the time when it was just you and me.
Do you remember?
You were so bright-eyed and full of energy. You had a permanent smile plastered on your face all. the. time.
In this photo, you were five and fabulous.
I remember when … you attended the same school where I taught. We used to ride into school and work together. Nutella on toast was your breakfast of choice.
I remember when … we used to have cuddle time. You and me in my great big bed tucked beneath the covers. We hugged, we talked, we giggled and I smooched those cute, chubby cheeks of yours.
I remember … how excited you got about anything we did and anywhere we went together. Your eyes would widen with excitement and you’d squeal in delight when you were having fun.
I remember … the first soccer team you played on, the first dance studio you enrolled at, the first gymnastics club you joined, your first year of softball and your first few years of piano lessons. You tried a lot of different sports and activities but only stuck with dance. I knew at four, when I saw you perform for the first time on stage, that dancing was going to be your thing, your passion.
You were an easy baby and a good kid.
And now, you’re a teenager. One year shy of your “Sweet Sixteen” birthday year. I cannot believe how fast you’ve grown up and how beautiful a young lady you’ve become. I know we may not always see the world through the same glasses but I’m proud of the sensitive, down-to-earth girl you’ve grown to be. You’ve made good choices in the friends you keep and I’m impressed at how well you’ve managed to stay clear of the trouble that plagues so many girls your age. It’s not easy growing up and trying to figure out who you are or who you want to be. I think you’re on the right track and I’m looking forward to all the great things I know you will accomplish one day.
You have been blessed with so many gifts. I know, in my heart, that one of them will eventually lead you on the path meant for you. And as your mother, I will go above and beyond to help you get there.
