Summer is now in full swing and while we’re enjoying the warmth, sunshine, BBQ’s, late nights, sleeping in, swimming, biking and just being outdoors … this mama is not enjoying the sibling bickering.
Yes, we’re in each others faces, day in a day out, without any breaks.
Yes, it was my decision to not sign the girls up for camps this year.
Camps are great but summer is the only time I get to be with my girls full-time and I’m not ready to give that time up quite yet. On top of that, good camps are pricey and with a limited income during the summer, not sending the kids to camp saves us a whole lot of money.
I don’t know when it started or what in the world triggered it, but oh my goodness, it’s like BAM … all of a sudden, the girls are fighting about everything! And if they’re not fighting, they’re irritating or tattling on each other.
Being 5 and 7, the girls are at different stages of their development and so very different in their personalities. These differences are inflicting great stress on their sisterly relationship. While one sister takes great care of her “things”, the other does not. While one sister is reading chapter books and loving it, the other is not reading at all. While one sister can remain focused on an activity for an extended period, the other gets bored quickly and wants to do something new with her sister following close behind. There is a squabble for almost everything they do together.
Mama then becomes the mediator … and it’s not fun.
So summer, for me, has become a bit of a challenge in that my mission has become to keep the girls busy and conflict-free. When they’re engaged or out and about in our community, they bicker less. When they free-play together or get bored, the bickering begins.
So, I’ve been keeping the girls busy with the following so far …
And now, I have resorted to Google – in an attempt to find local places or events we can go to that are inexpensive or free.
I will do anything to keep the bickering under control but I also can’t just play with them all day long. I have things to do!
If you’re a local friend, what places or events do you and your kids go to for fun?
