One of the biggest challenges of getting older, other than body changes, hair whitening and health issues is finding your place in the fashion world!
Yes, the fashion world.
As a 40 something woman, how do you dress when you know you’re not old enough to give in to polyester pants and Hush Puppies but not young enough to be able to pull the tribal or leopard print and crop tops?
After the birth of my last child, I found myself in fashion limbo. My body had changed shape and what used to look good on me, pre-baby, no longer flattered my now more voluptuous curves. Shopping for clothes became a struggle because I felt as if I could no longer dress as I once did.
It took me a few years of trial and error before I truly found my place in the fashion world.
With the advice and influence of a fashion savvy friend, I eventually found my way.
How did I do it? I perused through fashion magazines and then …
I came up with a list of wardrobe essentials.
Whether you wear them as pants with an oversize sweater, under billowy dresses for extra coverage, or kicking around running errands, black leggings are a must-have. I love mine!
Cuter than sneakers and more comfy than heels, ballet flats are the best of both worlds. Pair them with slim-cut pants and you’re good to go. Much more comfortable than heels when I’m teaching little ones!
a black cardigan
Black cardigans are season-less, timeless, and effortlessly chic. Keep one under your desk for aggressive air-conditioning, or wear it over a sexy dress on a night out for a hint of sexy librarian. Don’t forget your glasses with that look!
Stock your closet with a great basic pair of heels and you will be able to wear them with everything.
Flattering and timeless, a great pair of dark jeans can do wonders for any woman’s wardrobe. I prefer a super-skinny cut, but buy them in the silhouette that best suits your body shape.
a white blouse
Nothing says classy as a white blouse but paired with denim and it can instantly become more casual.
a white shirt, short or long sleeved
A plain white t-shirt is the fashion equivalent of seasoning: It goes with everything and makes it all a lot better. You can wear yours under a blazer, tucked into a high-waist skirt, with cutoffs …you get the idea.
a little black dress
When you find the perfect little black dress … buy two! You can dress one down with those (equally important) ballet flats.
classic black pants
On the weekend they’re “casual” cool and during the week they’re totally office-chic. Black pants are also slimming – as if you need another reason to pick up a pair.
a skin-tone-matching camisole
It is about as basic as it gets. Layer it under sheer blouses or dresses to avoid overexposure.
As you can see, I started off with this basic list but over time have collected additional wardrobe pieces that add colour and texture to my collection of clothes.
I’m happy with my basic pieces. I get so much use out of each one. They can so easily be interchanged with other clothing items I have in my closet.
THE best purchases I have ever made.
