I always thought that as the girls get older and more independent, it would free me up more time to do the things I have not had the chance to do since they were born. Turns out, I was totally correct in assuming so but what I didn’t anticipate is that the more time I have given to me, the more things I want to do and the more difficult it becomes to squeeze it all into my day.
Now that my girls are playing together more independently and relying less on mama to guide their play and creativity, I’m wanting to read books, exercise, write and work on projects that benefit my teaching. It doesn’t sound like much but when you calculate how much time each of these things requires, it doesn’t leave much room left for parenting. So as usual, I had to cut back on my “wishes” and prioritize by levels of importance.
What I’ve not been doing much of lately …
Reading books got kicked to the curb first. It’s a guilty pleasure. I feel guilty just sitting around escaping into other worlds while my current world needs attention.
Writing or blogging got shafted as well. I had plans to write more regularly when time permitted but once I had the time, I lacked the inspiration. Since I don’t like to write just to produce, I chose to not write which is why I’ve been MIA on the blog lately. My apologies. Of course, I’m not going anywhere. I think I will always blog but I do so when I have something to share and these days, I’ve been occupied with other areas of my life.
What I’ve been up to lately …
Exercise, surprisingly, has not been an area I have ignored, forgotten about or given up on. Normally, I fail in this department of my life because I lack the motivation to keep it up. So it surprises me to no end that I have managed to keep moving since the beginning of the year. I tried Yoga for the first time and loved it. Another surprise because my first thoughts of yoga included boredom. Who knew that strength stretching could prove to be so rewarding? I’ve also been speed walking. Never thought something as simple as fast walking could be enjoyable but slip on you favourite tunes and I’m gone. Yoga and speed walking have become my thing and I’m loving it.
Work project ideas have been lingering in my head for a while. I usually buy all the resources I use in my classroom because I never had the time to create my own. I’ve been thinking a lot about starting to design my own teaching tools and materials so that I can tailor them better to my needs and the needs of my students. If something I create turns out to be super successful and I can recreate it in multiples so that I can share it with other teachers, I would love it. Knowing this, hubby bought me a Macbook Pro for my birthday with some publishing software to create the ideas I have floating around in my head. If I can create something others would want to use in their classrooms, why not do it? Who knows, maybe I see a small business venture in my future?
Cooking has never been high on my list of things I enjoy. Trying to cook for a family who has such different likes, dislikes and needs has always been difficult for me. I always assumed it was because cooking didn’t interest me but now that I don’t have children stuck to every limb on my body, I have the time to cook without pressure. Turns out, the lack of time, has been what has held me back from enjoying exploring in the kitchen. Since hubby discovered he can’t eat Gluten and other foods because of sensitivities, we have both had to change the way we plan and make our family meals. Together, we are exploring new recipes and perfecting old ones and having fun while we’re at it. Another surprise for me!
As you can see, between exercising, work projects, cooking and parenting, I’ve been keeping busy! Turns out that the more time we have, the more stuff we want to do. It’s a vicious circle that takes us back to where we started! We all survive though! We do what we can while trying to get in some of the things we love along the way.
